Overview of Micronesia

Capital: Palikir
Language: English
Currency: US Dollar

The Federal State of Micronesia, once under the Trust Territory of the UN and administered by the United States, has four states; Yap, Chuuk, Pohnpei, and Kosrae. They have more than 600 islands all-in-all. If you don’t know where Micronesia is, it’s east of the Philippines (fun fact in the 1500-1800s this was once under the Philippines during the Spanish Rule),  just south of Guam. That’s why most flights to FSM is from Guam.

The four states; Yap, Chuuk, Pohnpei, Kosrae each have their own regional languages and their unique quality. Each state also represents a star in the flag of Micronesia. When traveling, you will pass by each of the islands’ immigration. This country also has 2 different times, GMT +10 for Yap and Chuuk, and GMT +11 for the other two.

This sunny nation is like any other pacific tropical country; it has sun and more sun! So, it’s better to travel in summer clothes. Hats, sunscreen, sunglasses are going to be your best friends. Temperatures range from 26 - 32 degrees.

Expect healthy food in Micronesia! From the staples - taro, yam, bananas, coconuts to seafood like shrimps, fishes, and shellfish. Pork and Chicken are also common, in case you are allergic to seafood. You will definitely enjoy the tasty cuisine of Micronesia!

Micronesians are friendly and they live in a peaceful country. This nation also boasts of its traditions and culture that have been passed on for generations. You might see topless women with grass skirts, locals giving you lais, those dancing traditional dances, and many more. This is such a diverse country you will totally fall in love with!

Going to Micronesia

Most direct flights from Micronesia is from Guam. It would take an hour and 40 minutes to Yap and two hours to Chuuk. If you want to visit the other two islands, then better start from Chuuk which takes 80 minutes to go to Pohnpei and another hour from Pohnpei to Kosrae.

There is also another direct flight to Kosrae, but it’s from the Marshall Islands. You can go here via Hawaii.

If you are from the Philippines, might as well go directly to Guam or if you want an extended vacation - go to Palau then Guam then the Federal State of Micronesia.

Want to see amazing reefs as well as enchanting wrecks? Dive at Chuuk Lagoon in Chuuk, Micronesia. During World War II, this lagoon was the main base of Japan, that’s why there are about 50 wreck dive sites on here featuring ships and airplanes. Don’t get scared or creeped out to see haunting wrecks under the sea, but get your cameras ready. You can also find corals near the ruins as well as fish and turtles swimming there.

2. Visit a local Village

Micronesia boasts of diverse cultures and local villages. There are tours where you can visit cultural villages and get to meet locals! See their handmade houses or crafts. Or what’s better? Witness their cultural dance. The popular traditional dance is the Churu in Yap; you can learn from here the history and teachings of the Yapese.

3. Bathe in Waterfalls

Pohnpei and Kosrae have picturesque waterfalls in Micronesia. Famous ones are; the Kepirohi Waterfall, Lehn Paipohn Waterfall or Saolung Waterfall. Adventure lovers would love hiking to the lush beautiful forest just to find this site for the eyes!

4. See the ancient ruins of Nan Madol

The Venice of the Pacific, Nan Madol, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This has been constructed in the 8th or 9th century and has been used until the 1600s. This man-made city was once home of kings and sorcerers. This has been sometimes called the Lost Continent and even Atlantis!

5. Have an adventure at Marine Parks

Kosrae offers two Marine Parks; the Utwe-Walung Marine Park and James Palsis Marine Park. They offer pristine forests, mostly made of mangroves. Discover the beauty of Nature and see how these are well preserved by the community as you tour via canoe, or on foot.

6. Tour around old battlefields

If Chuuk offers you wrecks underwater, then there are battlefields from World War 2 which are mostly from Japanese occupants. There are an old lighthouse and cave in Chuuk, camps in Pohnpei, relics, and shelters in Kosrae. There are also locals who have been born in that era too, they can tell you stories and even have Japanese names.
