Overview of Papua New Guinea

Capital: Port Moresby
Language: English, Hiri Motu, Tok Pisin
Currency: Papua New Guinean Kina (1 USD = 3.4 PGK)

Papua New Guinea is one of the countries whose island is shared by another country. The west of New Guinea is Papua and West Papua of Indonesia while the east is PNG. “Papua” means of unknown origin while “Guinea” was taken from the country Guinea in Africa. There are 4 countries named Guinea - Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Equatorial Guinea, and Papua New Guinea, the only one in the Pacific.

Papua New Guinea is a very culturally diverse country. There are about 800 plus indigenous languages. Each village or group may have different languages, skill sets or expertise, and traditions like paying with shells or bride dowries. The Papuans are very warm and friendly, too! You would enjoy learning about their culture when visiting here.

What to do in Papua New Guinea

Climb Mt. Wilhelm

Trek to the highest mountain in Papua New Guinea; Mount Wilhelm. It’s 15,000 feet high and you could definitely enjoy the gorgeous views it offers. It’s a bit challenging, so if you aren’t a professional, better be careful or just be on the low points (as you’ll get sick due to the altitude). You will have an experience of a lifetime as you go to the pic, it’s absolutely magnificent.

Visit a local village and talk to the people there! Learn more about their traditions or customs, hear their stories or witness them dance. Hopefully, you can see a “Singsing” which is a customary dance with traditional music. It will be a great cultural experience.

Enjoy Kitava Island

Snorkel in the crystal blue waters of Kitava Island and the white sand beaches of Kitava Island. Talk to the natives and buy local crafts. It’s a quiet little island where you can feel peace and tranquility; it’s a great place to enjoy your vacation in PNG.

Take a picture with Tavurvur

In New Britain Island in PNG has an active volcano named Tavurvur. It’s a great place to visit, you can climb to the crater or just take a picture far away. If you decide to walk be ready for the sulfur smell and bring water when hiking. The view is stunning and worth-it.
